FEBRUARY 14th - BASIC SKILLS/NEWBIE INTAKE

Hello all you roller derby hopefuls –

It’s been a crazy delicious time for roller derby lately, and that means that London Rollergirls have seen a major influx of potential new rollergirls. We now have so many newbies that we almost don’t know what to do with them! (Maybe knock ‘em around a bit?!?)

Anyway, in order to make sure that we always have enough space for new skaters, and enough resources and time to train them, we are currently re-thinking our newbie intake process. It will probably take us a while to figure it all out, but we have to do something pronto before you all start cloning yourselves and overrun London with pink and black knee socks.

So we will have one more monthly Basic Skills Session (BSS) and newbie intake on February 14th at a cost of £5 per rollergirl. Also, because we currently have so many new gals, we are asking potential rollergirls who come to the BSS to already be comfortable skating at a basic skill level. This means you have skated before and are stable going around a track on 8 wheels. You don’t have to be a master jam skater or the super duper fastest gal on quads, but we just want to know we can move straight past the teaching you how to skate part and jump into the derby skills part.

If you can’t skate at a basic level, or do not pick up the skills pretty quickly, and you still come to the BSS session, you will probably not be cleared to join the regular LRG practices this time around. So while we love tenacity and enthusiasm, please keep that in mind. A better route for this determination might be to find some alternate avenues for learning how to skate: like a private lesson, or attending roller discos, or getting together with other wannabe rollergirls to have a roll round the park.

London Rollergirls will continue to intake new skaters throughout the year, so don’t think this is your last chance. We are just going to change the way we do it after this last BSS in February. So if you want to join…get out there and get working on those skating skills!

* As always, guys and gals who are interested in reffing are welcome anytime no matter what…even if you have to crawl, you can still penalty track, right?

Saturday 7th February, Tottenham Green Leisure Centre: Steam Rollers vs Ultraviolent Femmes! Both teams are playing for their first win and not only that - the chance to take another crack at the Suffra Jets in the championship bout in April is on the line. This is going to be a stormer…

Doors open at 5:00 and the bout starts at 6:00PM. Advance sales have now ended and tickets are £10 on the door.
