The day I realised I was truly a Rollergirl!!

While cruising through the LRG Myspace page, there appeared a photo of two really tough looking Rollergirls in mid-block. The jammer on the right looked particularly scary, with her teeth bared and body pushing through to pass the pivot. I immediately thought it must have been a pic of one of the American teams, as I didn’t recognise either girl. I was thinking “Geez these girls look tough! I wouldn’t want to come across either of them in a bout!! they look so….so….well….SO DAMN TOUGH!”
Then I recognised something on the jammer’s upper arm…..a Hello Kitty tattoo……and it slowly dawned on me……IT WAS ME!! AUGH!!!

At first I was mortified to realise that apparently when I am scrimmaging, I am not my usual off-skate sweetness and light, but I am in fact a mean machine!! But then I realised that this was actually a very momentous occasion - it meant I was officially a bona fide RollerGirl!! I must be - I look like one!!! (I have since sent the link to everyone I know, including my nanna, so they too can rejoice in my transformation from cute lil’ ole’ me to Derby Menace.)

So for anyone who is reading this that has looked at photos of derby, and thought “There’s no way I could be like them;” the lesson today kids, is that if I can…..YOU CAN!!

Diary of a London Rollergirl
Episode 2 – Slice Andice v Corporate Whore

It’s official…. The derby powers that be have decreed my nom de…ah…rollerskate is acceptable. Slice Andice is now a registered Rollergirl on the official/unofficial global listings. I’m bonafide! Look!

*does happy dance*

My skater alter ego becoming official has led me to ponder on the differences between my daytime and nightime personalities. You know, the one I bring home to your mother and the five or six your mother warned you about.

Step one I guess is to admit that I actually have multiple personalities.

So, ah…hi, my name is Slice Andice and I am somewhat of a nut-job.

There.

By day I am Corporate Whore. People often look at me strangely when I tell them what I do. Mostly because when I meet people outside of the office there’s usually a tattoo or two proudly on display and my behaviour is all but business like. Mostly I get ‘you do what?’ accompanied by raised eyebrows and a disbelieving stare.

Of course after watching me delight in the simplicity of twirling in my circle skirts, or spending an hour poking my own bruises and scrunching my face at the hurt, you’d probably think the same.

In the office is a different story. Between the hours of 9 and 5, when I’m at [bitchass] head office, you can usually find me cramped in a corner somewhere (hotdesking sucks), quietly working away. I am a picture of professionalism. Immaculate grooming, coupled with crisp business shirts, pressed trousers and shiny shoes. I even have a pinstripe suit for those special days. I’m ever so polite, and say things like ‘fudge’ while pretending that I’m just like the boring people I work for.

Slice on the other hand swears like a trooper, slams into other females on purpose, and often looks like she got dressed in the dark.

All that being said though, both Slice Andice & Corporate Whore are way cuter, and more fun than early evening University Science Nerd…
