NO TATTOOS NECESSARY

<  NO TATTOOS NECESSARY

No tattoos necessary

I tried to recruit a potentially strong skater today and she said, ” I’ll need to get a few tattoos before I join the League”.

Yes most of the girls have some beautiful body work but it’s not for all of us. I admire all of their beautiful work but have concluded that if I have not gotten a tat by the age of 29 I will never do so. It’s also my little way of representing those of us who can do roller derby without feeling obliged to fit a certain look that has been adopted by Roller derby in the 21st century. Heck, I remember when derby was disco, Perhaps I should bring the disco back to derby. HA!

Honestly, I’m sure loads of girls are intimidated by all the beautiful art work the majority of the girls have and may think to themselves they will not fit in without the same ‘look’. That’s not True! Unfortunately the virgin skin girls don’t get enough PR time but we are a part of the League. We are a diverse group and at the end of the day we are all strong women with the common goal and passion for roller derby and that’s what we all have in common. It may be the basis of our relationship but relationships with substance do blossom and we are a loving dysfunctional family.

I have only been a Londoner for a year and 3 months. I am sure you can empathize the difficulty it is to find friends with substance. the league has not only given me an athletic outlet but it has also given me a wonderful family to be a part of.

So I will say it again NO TATTOOS NECESSARY TO BE A KICK ASS LONDON ROLLER GIRL!

Yours truly,

Here here! Even though I have a couple of tattoos - I agree that roller derby should allow women of all shapes, sizes, persuasions and styles in. Cos for me, roller derby is all about the women and being a woman in this century is all about choice!

So tattoed or not, please feel free to skate with us! x

I have wanted to be a roller derby girl since I was a little girl growing up in the states. I didn’t think London had a roller derby group chuffed to bits to see that they do. But, if I am honest, I always assumed as a overweight, not tatoo, non goth, pretty average woman that I wouldn’t fit it.

I used to be able to skate like no one’s business. I lived in rollder skates from the age of 14-17, white with pink pom-poms. *L* Those were the days.

everyone is welcome in the LRG! you don’t have to be part of any particular subculture…that’s the point, it’s about attitude and empowerment, and these things come from the inside. and about kick-ass skating, too!

Come down to a practise one day and meet the girls. We are looking for people to get involved with us in anyway possible. Hopefully we will get you on skates again but if not there is so much to get involved with. Marketing, bands, venus, PR, refeering, commitees, announcing the list goes on. If anything the thing I find most exciting about LRG is not so much the skating but that we are an organisation of people who are passionate about being significant. Significant in our own lives and significant in the lives of other people.

That and the fact you can put so many different people, personalities in the same room, on skates growing together and it just works. It’s addictive being witness to it all !

Hey f_l_i_r_t, as Mash says, we are quite the diverse rabble. It would be awesome if you came down to join us for a practice!

It’s funny,

my girls just had the same topic last time - many girls may be intimidated by the derby-look at first time - actually, when I contacted the first girls down here, I wrote them that I don’t have any tats but tons of great stockings ;)
But nevertheless I wanted to try. And I stayed. That’s why I’m convinced, that THE right girls won’t get intimidated - and that’s exactly what Roller Derby needs! Curious self-confident women!

[Of course, I would never tell you that I'm thinking of getting a tat, too.;)OnE DaY;)]

Roll on and greetZ from Germany!
